Sporting Events

With a vibrantly active community, sporting events have become a favourite pastime for many. Whether you are looking to play in a team, alone, for fun or for competition, as a form of exercise or as a new hobby, there are hundreds of outlets for watching or participating in sports, and plenty of ways to get active throughout the year. Hockey is played competitively at all levels across the province and the under-17 Mooseheads Hockey Team, who play throughout the year at Halifax’s biggest ice rink, are a favourite among the local population. In May, the Bluenose Marathon attracts runners from across the world. With seven different races across three days, this community event provides an exciting challenge for runners of all fitness levels, and helps raise money for a new collection of charities every year. Varsity sporting teams, including basketball, hockey, rugby and football, from the province’s universities compete throughout the year at stadiums across Nova Scotia, providing an exciting spectacle for sporting fans. The Antigonish Highland Games meanwhile, held annually in July, provides a weekend of entertainment and events for athletes of all ages and abilities, from the traditional Scottish Heavy Events, which attract the best strongmen from across Canada, to a number of shorter races and fun games. The numerous golf courses and driving ranges across the province are ideal for those looking to fill a relaxing afternoon, and offer classes for beginner golfers.
