Options for Learning English in Canada

If you’re planning to come to Canada to pursue your studies, but hope to improve your English language skills first, Nova Scotia has many excellent options in that regard.

You can pursue English Language Studies at one of several private language schools or you can study English in a University setting. Both Mount Saint Vincent and Saint Mary’s University have excellent ESL programs that can help you prepare to pursue degree programs.

Mount Saint Vincent University (The Mount)

The Mount offers 3 English as an Additional Language programs for international students who have received a conditional acceptance to the Mount but haven’t yet reached the minimum language requirements (i.e. TOEFL or IELTS) for full-time university study.  These programs are also designed for anyone who has met the minimum language requirements, but feel that they would benefit from further academic preparation.  The Mount offers the Academic Foundations Program, the University Bridging Program and the Graduate Preparatory Program.

Additionally, the International Education Centre offers one-on-one language tutorials, study groups, and workshops free of charge.

East Coast School of Languages (ECSL)

We understand that a student’s language school experience lasts a lifetime and that choosing where to study is a major decision. Our students describe our school as a family, where they feel comfortable and cared for. Like a family, we are strict about some things — attendance, homework, our English-only policy and the number of students we accept from any one nationality. Students who are serious about achieving their learning objectives excel in our small classes supported by warm, dynamic instructors. Students also need to have fun — in our school we never know when we’ll have an impromptu birthday party, a hip-hop dance show, or a sing-along. Our students and staff are very talented! Check out our Facebook Student Group to see what we have been doing in school and on our exciting social activities.

ECSL prides itself on offering programs with challenging curricula and clearly defined outcomes. We provide a University College Pathway program (UCP) to twenty of Atlantic Canada’s universities and colleges. Successful graduates of this program do not require an external exam score, such as IELTS. In addition, we provide General English (ECP), IELTS Preparation (IP) and Masters Preparation (MP), and a challenging International Business English (IBE) program. ECSL is a leader in developing customized ESL programs for groups. By partnering with universities, residential facilities, and other service providers, we offer numerous short-term specialized courses for middle school, high school, undergraduate and graduate students, business leaders, and other special-interest groups. ECSL is also an official IDP IELTS test centre and a multiple-year winner of the Consumer Choice Award for Best Language School in Halifax.
